2D and 3D Animation
What is 2D animation?
2D animation, abbreviated as 2D, two-dimensional, or 2D, refers to the computer graphics used to create two-dimensional animated images. These images are often created for film and television and used in video games and applications. Because 2D animation can be done on a personal computer, it has become an important technique used by amateur animators and students who do not have access to the high-end equipment of larger animation studios such as Walt Disney Animation Studios or Pixar Animation Studios.
Introduction to 3D animation
3D animation (also known as 3D graphics, 3D modelling or sometimes computer animation) is a technique that generates image data or animation by mathematically manipulating 3D models or structures in 3D space.
3D animation VS 2D animation
The most obvious difference between 2D and 3D animations is, of course, their dimension. If you’re able to look past that and simply focus on what’s being conveyed, both types have their pros and cons. At its core, 3D animation gives viewers a sense of depth while traditional two-dimensional (2D) animation conveys solidity through artistic style. For example, at one point in time hand-drawn images conveyed realness whereas cartoon characters made with anime were regarded as unrealistic. Nowadays it’s apparent that more people find cartoons adorable and worthy of attention than images rendered by hand. The mere style in which 3D animators create things allows viewers to relate to that same style in real life. That said, many still prefer 2D because it seems more personal. It all depends on your purpose for creating an animation. Whatever method you choose, be sure to do thorough research before getting started. There are plenty of resources online that can help with everything from brainstorming ideas to learning how best to execute them. You might even want to consider attending an art school or college program if you want extra help. Either way, once you get started don’t forget about these tips
Perks of 2D and 3D animation
While there are many benefits to each type of animation, it can be hard to decide whether to go with 2D or 3D animation. Luckily, you don’t have to choose! The two can be used together, and they both bring something unique to the table. Here are some of the top benefits of 2D and 3D animation working together.
1. Simplicity
One of the biggest benefits of animation is its ability to make things simple. A picture, even one moving across a screen, can convey more information in a shorter amount of time than words on a page or dialogue in a scene. Because pictures are easier to understand than words, they’re also easier for audiences to enjoy.
2. Improved Planning
3. Increased Production Value
The best part about animated content is that it’s available in both 2D and 3D. A study by our friends at TechCrunch found that, for their annual Apps for Earth campaign, WWF saw a conversion rate increase of 34% among website visitors who watched an animated explainer video from 1% to 15%. And if you think about your own buying experience on Amazon or another e-commerce site, you know how effective a good product demo can be in generating interest (and sales).
